The Energy Planning Exercise That Keeps You Consistent on Any Day

The Energy Planning Exercise That Keeps You Consistent on Any Day

There are days when you wake up and feel like you could take on everything: the inbox, the workout, the long conversation you've been putting off, the creative project gathering dust. And then there are days when getting out of bed feels like its own kind of victory.

Our energy levels change throughout our cycles and throughout the day. An infinite number of things could be pulling us away from what we want to accomplish and how we want to look after ourselves.

If you’ve ever struggled to build new habits or stick to a routine, this one is for you.

Take a minute and think about the areas of your life that feel off, the things that leave you drained, frustrated, or just quietly unhappy. Write them down.

Now flip it. What do you genuinely love? What lights you up, and what do you wish you had more time and space for? Write that down too.

Next, look at where your energy is actually going right now. What are your real priorities? These are things that need your attention every single day. List those out.

Now go back to your first two lists. Circle anything you feel genuinely ready to change or do more of. Not everything, just what feels true right now. Starting with less is smarter than committing to everything and burning out before you begin.

Now here's where it gets really useful.

Take each item you circled and ask yourself: what does this actually look like on a low energy day versus a high energy day?

In other words, what is the minimum that I can do and still hit this goal/value?

Grab a fresh sheet of paper and map it out like this:

For each commitment, give yourself two versions: minimum and ideal. Here's what that might look like:

Exercise — Low energy: roll out of bed and hold a plank for one minute. High: a full class 2x a week or 15 minutes with weights on off-days.

Sales or outreach — Low energy: send five emails. High energy: send thirty, or show up in person.

Spiritual practice — Low energy: one minute of intentional breathing. High energy: a twenty-minute meditation.

See how that works? You're not letting yourself off the hook; you're giving yourself a floor. A minimum that still counts, still moves you forward, and still lets you look back at the end of the day knowing you prioritized what matters to you and your goals.

There is something powerful about showing up every day, even when it is imperfect. Knowing and accepting your time and energy limits can be a great way to stay both committed and gentle. As always, I’m wishing you a beautiful day and joyful life. You deserve it.

Till next time,
